Everyone's definition of success is going to be different, naturally, since we all have varying interests, passions & purposes. Success is tied to what means the most to you, what you value as important, impactful & what represented a challenge to you that you were able to overcome or a desire achieved.
Here are some notes from today's episode:
- I always had the desire to be someone who was super successful because I played small all my life & had this fantasy that someday I would graduate out of this type of thinking & be bold, brave & accomplished. But that’s not quite how it went.
- I would say that I wanted to be successful for the wrong reasons at first. I was really focused on doing it to show other people up & make them see how great of a person I was, which is something they neglected to see when I was younger. Or I needed validation that I was someone that mattered in the world because I achieved some sort of success that is measurable to others.
- And a lot of people will count themselves successful if they are popular, making a ton of money & have enough attention on them. But this isn’t really that fulfilling. This can all really turn lackluster quicker than we think because it all gets old & doesn’t hold any true meaning to us. It’s not connected to our purpose. It doesn’t get us up in the morning or bring excitement every day.
- Being successful is about achieving what you want because you want it, because it aligns with your personal goals & purpose & because it’s something that means something to you, not someone else. No one else matters when obtaining success because it’s something you will have to put the work into & needs to satisfy you in the end. Think about doing all this work & then no one really cares in the end. That would feel like a giant waste of time.
- And your successes aren’t going to match up to someone else’s ideas of success, which isn’t something to worry about. We all have different perspectives of what the finish line looks like for success & that’s important because it needs to fit who you are & what works for you. Comparison will really be the thief of joy here, if you let it, because you feeling successful as a mother because you child graduated from college isn’t going to be the same as someone that feels successful as a newly licensed pilot or someone speaking on a stage for the first time or actually getting through 30 days without a substance they are quitting. It’s all success.
- Plus, a lot of times success is measured in how you feel at the end, not necessarily what you get. For example, being successful could mean having the ability to give financially to an organization that is important to you. Or seeing that you have made a difference in someone else’s life through mentoring or support. It could also just be having the ability to do what you love instead of something you don’t enjoy for work everyday.
- Cultivating success in your life also means more positive moments to dwell on, but also redefined purpose & possible recovery from pain that may have been caused by failures & mistakes made in the past.
- If you haven’t lately, ask yourself what you think success looks like for you? Think about it & come tell me what you discovered.
