Hello Everyone & Welcome Back to the RealPositiveGirl Podcast!
Thank you so much for joining me again!
Happy Monday!
This week's theme for the podcast is: Imposter Syndrome
This week we are going to speak about imposter syndrome & how suffering from that can affect your day to day life & your overall mindset.
Join me in learning more about imposter syndrome & how to pull away from the vicious cycle it creates!
Here are some notes from today's episode:
- I decided to talk about Imposter Syndrome this week because it seems to me that many people suffer from this & it prevents so many people from taking chances on their dreams & desires, as well as feeling confident in the things they know & are passionate about.
- So, in a quick nutshell, Imposter Syndrome is when someone doubts their abilities, knowledge, accomplishments & talents and continues to have the fear of being exposed as a fraud or a fake. This is also despite what praises or other positive words that come from other people.
- Imposter syndrome can affect anyone, despite their level of success. However, it appears to afflict many people that are on the road to success. It has also been linked to those suffering from perfectionism & how you feel about your position in a social group/setting.. With imposter syndrome comes feelings of inadequacy & severe self-doubt that contributes to the fraud feelings.
- Not surprisingly, this affects women more than it does men, but still can affect everyone.
- It’s interesting that despite the amount of education & professional accomplishments someone can have, imposter syndrome can still sneak up & try to take someone down. You can believe that you aren’t smart, don’t know what you are talking about, like you don’t belong, only got to where you are by luck & have been able to fool everyone into thinking otherwise.
- Some common symptoms of imposter syndrome is high anxiety, doubting achievements, low self-esteem & some frustration. You might also have thoughts like, “I’m so fake,” “I don’t deserve this job/opportunity/amount of money.”
- In addition, you can believe that you only got to where you are from other’s help & additional outside sources. And interesting enough, sufferers can be overachievers & someone that ends up sabotaging your own success.
- The problem with imposter syndrome is that no matter how much success you have or how well things go, this does not change how you feel about yourself. A lot of times, this feeds into a vicious cycle of wrongly identifying what helped us accomplish or get through our current thing. For example, you aced the presentation at the big meeting this morning, but you attribute it to staying up all night to prepare or you get through an anxiety-inducing party but you attribute it to memorizing conversation topics & who would be attending.
- We will chat more about this as the week goes on.
Please share this podcast with anyone that may need this encouragement!
