THE FIRST ALTAR, we hear about in Scripture is found in
Genesis 12:7 “And the Lord appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the Lord, who appeared unto him.An altar represents a genuine desire to give oneself wholly to the Lord because of His work in them.
When Israel fell into rebellion and idolatry, their altars began to fall.
Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and “repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down” (1 Kings 18:30).
Elijah’s restoration of the altar is critical because of the paganism of his day.
It was here, on this rebuilt altar, that the Lord rained down fire and put the Baal worshipers to shame.
