#021 Building Trust Within Your Department with Kara Mease

Paraprofessionals must have knowledge and skills to support our students and they must be good at building relationships with children. Like other educators, a paraprofessional needs to know when to step back and encourage a student to be independent, but also when to step in and provide assistance. Paras must have good time management skills and be able to take direction.

But there’s something else paraprofessionals must have...trust.

In today's episode we hear from Kara Mease who has been a paraprofessional with my department for 3 years. She shares what my co-teacher and I did to set her up for success from day 1 usingthis paraprofessional handbook and stresses the importance of being able to trust her supervisors and the desire to have them trust her.

If building trust within your department has been one of the blindspots you’ve been missing, then I hope this episode has hit home with you.

Speaking of blindspots...make sure you take the Special Educator's Superpower Quiz to  get affirmation of the things you do well as a teacher and the blindspots that are holding you up from becoming the teacher you always dreamed you’d be. And who knows...you might get Batman like me which is just pretty cool! Go to spedprepacademy.com/quiz to find out your superpower.
