In today’s scripture, we see Jesus giving wisdom and advice to His disciples. Jesus seems to be trying to give them some last minute instruction before His time runs out.
The feeling I get here is kind of like the parent who is trying to give some last minute cliff notes for life to their child as she’s leaving to start her life in another state. She is very confident and feels more than ready for the world but the parent knows that she doesn’t even now what she doesn’t know. She has yet to learn how much she has to learn.
Of course, in our scripture today, Jesus is the one who will be leaving and His disciples don’t even see it coming. I know that Jesus knew that everything would work out to the glory of God the Father but, just as Jesus Himself did not want to go to the cross, did not desire to experience the pain and humiliation of a public roman execution, neither did He want His disciples to experience what was before them. I believe Jesus was preparing them to make their experience as easy as possible. And now we have access to this wisdom to ease our lives as we make our way through this life as best we can.
