Episode 94
Speaker: Pauline McDougall
Talk: Scriptural Models for Transformation.
I am sitting in the studio today, preparing this episode and the news of the Russian invasion of Ukraine is filling the airwaves. All over the world people are again confronted with the horror of war, horrors inflicted on innocent people even children.
Jesus knew this situation first hand, his country was invaded by a powerful and brutal regime, and it is very good for us to reflect on how he handled it. He had two ways of looking at the situation he was in.
One way of thinking was, that the power of brutality and fear was paramount and inevitable
This is how we are as human beings, we are born competitive and every day we compete with others for survival. That in the end violence is the only way we can stop our enemies.
But on the cross, Jesus showed a new way for us to handle violence, by a radical commitment to non-violence. Jesus believed that he was to bring the peace and reconciliation that God desires into every human relationship, and he personally paid the price of his total commitment to non-violence and forgiveness.
As we discuss with our families the terrible situation in Ukraine, let us, like Jesus keep on saying that war is not inevitable, but that it is a choice that men and women make. And that we personally will never refrain from trying to make the world safe and healthy, a world where we no longer want to or need to make anyone feel afraid. The cost is high but the reward is Great Stay safe and free from fear.
