Listen

Description

In this episode, Jackie and Denise share how Step 9 is where sh*t gets more real. The steps prior were about inner work and processing, but this step is about ownership and confronting your actions — communicating your accountability to those affected.

In the traditional 12 Step model, the 9th step is to “Make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.” In the 12 Steps for Everyone framework, this step is about making amends, with a focus on “I” statements. This includes referring to the list made in Step 8, and then working with somebody to determine which amends need to be made. (This is why you don’t toss Step 4!)

Jackie and Denise also share ways how making amends can be sabotaged in hopes of ignoring the issue or abandoning it. Jackie acknowledges an amend she needs to make, and Denise shares a story about her last alcoholic job before getting sober. The duo also discuss  that making amends doesn't guarantee a repaired relationship, and that amends — whether expressed or received — have to acknowledge boundaries put in place, by ourselves or others.

Hey listeners! Denise and Jackie are planning a hybrid group event.
