Description

This week we arm ourselves with Weapons—the mystery-horror from Zach Cregger, starring Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, and Alden Ehrenreich. It’s a tale where 17 kids vanish at 2:17 a.m., but where they went and why it happened is the mystery at the center of it all.  Did Weapons hit the mark for these two knucklehead film reviewers or is it the equivalent of the marksmanship of a stormtrooper?

Background & Interesting Details

• Following the success of Barbarian (2022), Zach Cregger crafted Weapons as a deeply personal horror epic, drawing inspiration from Magnolia, Prisoners, and A Visit from the Goon Squad

• The script spurred a major bidding war early 2023; Warner Bros. acquired it with a $38M deal guaranteeing theatrical release and granting Cregger significant control—earning $10M upfront plus final cut privileges

• Casting shifted due to the 2023 labor strikes. Pedro Pascal, Renate Reinsve, and others were initially attached, but scheduling conflicts led to replacements: Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan

• Filming took place in Atlanta (May–July 2024), with school scenes shot in Tucker and a gas station in Covington, Georgia

• The soundtrack, released August 1, 2025, features compositions by Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay, and Zach Cregger; includes “Beware of Darkness” by George Harrison (opening) and “Under the Porch” by MGMT (end credits)
