Plot Summary

A quintessential British family holiday—father Richard (Nick Frost), mother Susan (Aisling Bea), and their teenage kids Sam and Jessie—sets off for the remote Swedish island of Svälta to participate in the island's strange Karantän festival. Expecting a quirky cultural experience, they’re instead met with icy locals, bizarre rituals, and an overall unsettling vibe

Background & Interesting Details

• The project was originally titled Svalta, based on a pitch acquired in 2019. Nick Frost wrote the screenplay and initially co-wrote with Simon Pegg and others; Lena Headey was attached but replaced by Aisling Bea due to scheduling conflicts. Filming wrapped in Finland in 2023.

• It premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 20, 2024

• Distribution: IFC Films and Shudder picked it up for North America, with UK streaming via Sky Cinema; launched OTT in India June 2025

• Critics highlighted its horror-comedy blend, comparing it to The Wicker Man and Midsommar. A delightfully demented twist and final gorefest were praised, though some felt the tone was overextended
