In today's episode of The Hero of the Hour Podcast, Mark chats with Scott Dolson, Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Indiana University. Following his graduation from university, Scott worked for Tim Knight Enterprises before returning to Indiana University in December 1989. While serving as director of IU's Varsity Club in 2008, he was tapped to replace Fred Glass as IU's deputy director and chief operating officer of intercollegiate athletics. In March 2020, he was appointed President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at IU.
Under Scott’s leadership, IU has been at the forefront of supporting its female student-athletes and women’s intercollegiate athletics. Shortly after he assumed the leadership of IU Athletics, he announced the creation of the Women’s Excellence Initiative, a fundraising effort designed to enhance the intercollegiate athletic opportunities for IU’s female student-athletes. In its first year, the Women’s Excellence Initiative has already exceeded its original goals and has already been utilized for a number of important projects, including the renovation of the IU Women’s Basketball Team Center and a foreign trip for the IU Women’s Volleyball program.
During the episode, they discuss the five core principles that Scott adheres to: playing by the rules, being well in mind, body and spirit, achieving academically, excelling athletically, and integrating with the university.
They talk about why Indiana University is very mission-oriented, and the way in which the school defines success, and what success looks like, and then work hard and smart to make certain that success becomes a reality.
Scott also explains how he tries to (with the help of his family) create health, wealth and love in his life, and how much of a struggle balance can be to maintain.
