Verses Used:
- 1 John 1-4
- John 14:6
- Hebrews 4:16
- John 8:32
Takeaways:
- Information without application never leads to transformation. We must not just know the truth but live it - that’s where faith becomes real.
- There is a spiritual battle going on for truth and people’s souls
- When everything around us is shifting, God gives us His Spirit and His Word to help us know what is true and to stand firm in it.
- His invitation is to live in a way of daily trust, where we experience peace and even joy.
Know Jesus (The Real Jesus)
- Jesus is fully God and fully man; this is a profound theological truth. The theological term for this is the hypostatic union.
- Jesus is not a created being. He is eternal. And one of the reasons it matters that Jesus is divine is for our salvation.
Know Fellowship (A personal connection with God himself)
- The word fellowship is used in 1 John 1:3, and the Greek word is koinonia which means communion, association, partnership.
- When we trust Jesus for salvation, we have fellowship with Jesus himself. We have fellowship with Jesus and other Jesus followers.
- Stay connected to the body of Christ - we discern truth in community, not isolation
Know Joy (The Joy of being in God’s eternal family)
- Happiness is not a bad thing, but it is temporary and fragile and relies on changeable conditions. On the other hand, joy is a deep abiding confidence and contentment that comes from knowing God and being secure in Him.
- We lose joy when we lose truth.
- When we believe the lies of the enemy we hear: You are not enough. God could never love you after what you’ve done. Joy is for other people, not you.
- Joy comes when we let go of lies and walk in freedom of what God says: You are a child of God. You are forgiven. You are loved with an everlasting love.
Discussion Questions:
- Why do you think some people struggle to believe they can approach God without a mediator?
- Why do you think Satan would want to distort Jesus’ true identity?
- Why do you think joy is something God wants his people to experience?
- Can you think of someone who showed great joy through a hard situation? How did it impact your faith?
