This month inside PPHR we’re looking at EAP’s and Employee wellbeing initiatives and it got me thinking – is our employees wellbeing really our responsibility as business owners?
I mean of course we want to create a great place for people to work, but can we really hold the load for being responsible for their wellbeing? I’m not sure, I think we need to create a place that supports wellbeing, but I think that’s very different to being responsible for it….
In saying that, I don’t think we can turn a blind eye to it’s importance – so what is our role?
Our role is to create an environment which is ‘psychological safe’ which is supportive, within which people feel comfortable to do their best work, and know that we are looking out for them.
To create the environment within which they can thrive.
That will look different for everyone ….
But it’s about our leadership, and the support mechanisms we invest in to put around that. Our reactions and responses when someone isn’t doing so well, has personal issues maybe, do we punish them or support them?
But it’s not our job to take on the mental load, to be the counsellor.
So what role do you take on when it comes to employees wellbeing? Too active? Too absent? Somewhere in between?
