Description

This episode is all about breaking barriers! Anne Butler Montgomery, this week's guest, was one of the first female sportscasters in the 1980s and 90s, a time when women were almost entirely absent from the field. Growing up as an ice skater and ice dancer, Anne’s love for sports started early. Despite not being a top athlete, she dreamed of being involved in the sports world.

From high school to her professional career, Anne faced skepticism and resistance. Yet, she persisted, proving that passion and hard work can overcome even the toughest challenges. She was once told to apologize for correcting a young production assistant on a fundamental baseball rule at ESPN!

Anne’s career spans multiple roles—television sportscaster, writer, teacher, author, and amateur sports official.

Despite the male-dominated environment, Anne found support from kind male colleagues who mentored her, highlighting the importance of allies in breaking gender barriers.

After her contract with ESPN ended, Anne faced ageism and sexism, leading to a difficult period in her life. Transitioning to teaching, Anne learned to connect with her students on a personal level, showing the power of empathy and understanding in education and, later in fostering teens.

Now she writes beautiful novels covering many topics, reflecting her endless curiosity and love for learning.
