• 1925: Baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig’s streak of playing in 2,130 consecutive games began when he pinch hit for shortstop Pee Wee Wanniger.

• 1926: Actress Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortensen in Los Angeles.

• 1944: The British Broadcasting Corp. aired a coded message intended to inform the French resistance that the D-Day invasion was imminent.

• 1967: The album “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” by the Beatles was released.

• 1980: CNN made its debut.

• 2007: Assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian walked out of a Michigan prison, where he’d spent eight years for ending the life of a man suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease.

• 2008: Presidential candidate Barack Obama announced he had resigned his 20-year membership in the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago in the aftermath of inflammatory remarks by his longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

• 2009: General Motors filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. It was the fourth largest United States bankruptcy in history.
