It’s a Dog’s Life

Sam, a veterinarian, had been called to examine a very ill fifteen-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Duke. The dog’s owner, Ron, and his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Duke and they were hoping for a miracle.

Sam examined Duke and found he was dying of cancer. Sam told the family that he couldn’t do anything for Duke, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As they made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told Sam they thought it would be good for four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, Sam felt that familiar catch in his throat as Duke’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that Sam wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Duke slipped peacefully away.

Shane seemed to accept Duke’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. As Sam and...
