What would you do if you moved into a house where an entire family had been murdered, only to discover a collection of disturbing home movies that might reveal the truth behind their deaths? Welcome to Sinister (2012), the supernatural horror film that proves Ethan Hawke should probably stop moving into houses where terrible things have happened.
In this R Rating podcast, we're diving into Scott Derrickson's Sinister, starring Ethan Hawke as true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt. Desperate to write another bestselling book, Ellison moves his family into a house connected to a gruesome murder. When he discovers a box of mysterious Super 8 films in the attic, he uncovers a horrifying pattern of killings that puts his entire family in danger.
We'll discuss the film's creepy atmosphere, disturbing found-footage sequences, unsettling soundtrack, and the increasingly terrifying mystery surrounding the supernatural entity known as Bughuul. We'll also talk about Ethan Hawke's performance, the questionable decisions made by the characters, and why those home movies are so incredibly effective at getting under your skin.
Is Sinister one of the scariest horror movies of the 2010s? Does it deliver genuine nightmares, or does the explanation behind its mystery take away some of the terror? And most importantly, will we ever look at an old home movie the same way again?
Join us as we break down the scares, the story, the disturbing imagery, and everything that makes Sinister such a memorable entry in modern supernatural horror.
