Description

October 2, 2007 - From the Smokey Mountains west to Bryce Canyon National Park. Or from the Vicksburg battlefield to the Edmund Pettus Bridge, a cornerstone site for the Civil Rights movement.
During the summer of his 50th birthday in 2006, Collin College professor of history Matthew Coulter decided to travel for 50 days soaking in the essence of the United States and touring the sites that made it what it is. This last summer, Coulter continued his trek for another 51 days. All the while, taking the sights and sounds of the places he visits and implementing them into his curriculum.
Professor Coulter's travels have taken him across the country. But it is easy to forget the historical and cultural hub that surrounds us in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Michael Phillips, professor of history and author of "White Metropolis: Race, Ethnicity and Religion in Dallas, 1841-2001" notes the five must-see destinations within driving distance of Collin County.
