Traditional Teaching (Matthew 5:38} An eye for and eye was initially intended for national relationships, but it had became personal. Individuals would quickly invoke a revenge attitude. When someone comes at you do not comeback with are resistance. When you retaliate, you become part of the cycle that is hard to escape, leading to death.
Vicious Cycle (Matthew 5:39; Thessalonians 5:15) Always seek to do good to one another and to all. Discussions about turning the other cheek when slapped, walking the extra mile and giving to beggars. We are to be the kind of persons who repays evil with good, to give a food sermon for the evil ones. Paul commented on when the first will be last and the last will be first.
Transforming Initiative (Matthew 5:39-42) The ones who will come and die for Israel, being slapped and forced to into unjust labor; Jesus returned evil received with a blessing of ding on the cross and God returned salvation for all who fall in His Son's footsteps
