Etymology (origins) of the word CONFESS:
- from Latin confessus, past participle of confiteri ‘acknowledge’; the con expressing ‘along with’ and the fateri expressing ‘declare’ or ‘avow’.
Synonym: A word or phrase that means nearly exactly the same thing as another word or phrase in the same language, for example “shut” and “close”.
Homonym: Two words having the same pronunciation but different meanings, for example “scene” and “seen”.
Analogue: A person, idea, or thing that is seen as being comparable to something else in a manner that suggests correspondence, in a systematic way.
Homologue: A sequence having the same relative position within a genetic structure (biology); a molecule that is the same as another molecule, but which differs from it by having an additional component (chemistry).
