Penan Villages Take a Stand Against Logging
Nick responded to a media report that said 2 Penan villages in Ulu Baram refused to be involved in the auditing process of the Malaysia MTCS Timber certification scheme for the FMU Forest Management Unit. Nick explained that not only two, but the majority of Penan villages in the UBFA-Ulu Baram Forest Area, disagreed with the auditing process. Only a small number of residents agreed - they were probably influenced by Samling's promises. Nick explained that the Penan association and the Penan leaders from each Penan village (within the UBFA Area) had written a protest letter to Samling and that Samling was not allowed to enter the land of the Penan to log. In media reports, only Long Lamai and Ba Lai are said to refuse auditing. Nick hopes that Samling will respect the rights of the Penan people who do not want logging to damage their forests.
