*Malaysia is facing a critical Migrant crisis*
On 16 April 2023- Human Resources Minister V Sivakumar was called by the MACC to record a statement regarding the corruption investigation of the approval of hiring foreign workers. Several officials at the Ministry of Human Resources were detained by the MACC.
It is estimated that there are 5 million illegal immigrants in Malaysia and 95% are victims of labor exploitation. On 17 January 2023, the Minister of Home Affairs confirmed that 120 thousand foreign workers have landed in Malaysia and this number will continue to increase to 500 thousand by the end of 2023. This is all to meet the needs of the workforce.
According to Aziz, the law to protect foreign workers is sufficient. But the problem now is enforcement and corruption. Asked why there are so many cases of foreign workers being brought into Malaysia but there is no work for them?. Aziz explained that all this is due to syndicates that want to make quick profits through the exploitation of foreign workers. For example a company that only needs 100 employees but reports that they need 200 employees. When these 200 workers arrived in Malaysia, only half got jobs. The company that colluded with the agent has received money from the fees charged and the excess workers who do not have work actually need to be sent home by the employer and their fees must be refunded. In fact, the employer can be sued in court and subject to action under existing laws. But all this did not happen.
The laxity of enforcement and the widespread occurrence of corruption cause the problem of foreign workers without permits, foreign workers who have expired, foreign workers who later become slaves and tools of human trafficking. The offense of advertising non-existent jobs. Applying for job quotas exceeding the requirements and MOU between G to G- as a marketing tool, irresponsible agents should be monitored and supervised by the government
