*Local Resident Boyce Challenges APS Chairman's Criticism of Save Rivers in Baram*
An NGO named Advokasi Pribumi Sarawak (APS) has recently criticized SAVE Rivers in relation to the Samling lawsuit. They also supported Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau's statement in March, where he expressed support for logging companies due to the job opportunities they bring to the orang ulu community.
However, locals, including Boyce from Loh Moh in the interior of Baram, are unaware of the existence of APS and its Executive Chairman Nigel Raymond.
Boyce emphasized that Nigel and APS are completely unknown in Baram. He further stated that the 5 million defamation lawsuit filed by Samling Plywood against Save Rivers is an attempt to intimidate local residents into refraining from speaking out against Samling's logging activities near their homes in the Panjang area. Samling claims that Save Rivers issued a false statement without the consent of local residents regarding logging in the Gerenai FMU Area.
However, communities in Long Moh and Lepo Agak have asserted that they were not informed or in agreement with the logging activities. Samling is demanding 5 million in damages, an apology, and a commitment from Save Rivers not to repeat the alleged defamatory statement.
Boyce stressed that Samling's actions will not silence them, and they will continue to speak out and protest against logging in their area. Samling has attempted to present their logging activities as environmentally sustainable through the use of FMU (Forest Management Unit) terms. However, according to Boyce, the logging activities remain unchanged from before. The lawsuit is scheduled to resume on September 18-20, 2023.
