Description

Radio Free Sarawak has an exclusive report from Peter John Jaban, fresh back from the Murum Dam, which is currently being flooded far from the eyes of the outside world.

He reveals the desperate situation of the native Penan people of the area, who have been left hoping that the government will fulfil vague promises to provide them enough land for their next generation. The hunter gatherers have seen their entire forest flattened and they have been moved to a new longhouse in the centre of an oil palm plantation, where they can find no food. All the job opportunities have been given to foreign workers and their compensation so far is just 4 years of below minimum wage payments per month.

We ask where are Malaysia's other journalists and politicians as this ghastly project unfolds and who is going to stop up to 50 more such disastrous dam projects planned by Sarawak's Chief Despot, Taib Mahmud?

Also on the show, more on the forceful campaign by government officials to convince native communities to accept the perimeter survey plan, which is designed to remove their native customary rights over traditional lands.

And the rising crime debate. The government has been complaining about criticism over this issue with some BN politicians suggesting that people should be locked up as a "preventative measure". Are there not more sensible ways to tackle this problem?

And much more besides.
