15 longhouses in Bakun have signed a petition objecting to the acquisition of the Bakun lake ‘islands’ supposedly to create a National Park. They don't trust Taib Mahmud's motives and they are angry at the failure to consult them over the fate of their own native territories. They tell us how these islands in their flooded homelands still belong to them and they don’t want their rights and privileges to be extinguished.
And in contrast to the problems associated with mega-dams like Bakun, we look at the the gathering momentum behind the micro-hydro campaigns being spearheaded by NGOs. Compared to the billions it costs to build one mega-dam, just RM100,000 is being raised to help the people at Long Semado in Lawas get electricity at last.
And plenty of feedback, especially from students, on the government’s decision to put off its plan to list errant borrowers of the PTPTN in CCRIS. Tune in and keep contacting us.
