“Was? – Heute wird hier nur eine imaginäre Band vorgestellt? Och menno!” – Naja, man kann halt nicht alles haben, jedenfalls nicht immer. Und Ihr müsst zugeben, dass Bens imaginäre Band ziemlich real klingt. Der Titel “Life in a Cave” stammt von Bens wunderbarem Album “Nocturnal Fables and Illusions” und er handelt von einer Person, die es vorzieht in eine Höhle zu ziehen, anstatt die Gegenwart einer bestimmten anderen Person zu teilen, die sie ganz nervös und unsicher macht. Schreckliche Vorstellung und zum Glück völlig unrealistisch.
Weil ich Bens Imaginary Band so wundervoll finde, habe ich Ben gefragt, ob ich hier etwas über ihn und seine Musik schreiben kann und ihm ein paar Fragen gemailt.
Ben: Ich wäre echt froh, wenn ich in Deinem Blog vorkommen würde! Und Du kannst meine Songs dort natürlich hochladen. Ich werde versuchen Deine Fragen zu beantworten so gut ich kann.
“Warum hast Du Dein Album unter der sehr freien Lizenz Creative Commons Namensnennung 3.0 Unported veröffentlicht? Warum hast Du keine restriktivere Lizenz gewählt?
Ben: Der Grund warum ich meine Musik unter freien Lizenzen veröffentliche und das auch weiterhin tun werde, ist, dass ich persönlich Musik nicht als etwas betrachte, dass ich zu Geld machen sollte. Ich finde es viel interessanter, wenn ich mit meiner Musik Menschen irgendwie berühren kann, besonders Menschen, die mir nahe stehen.
Meine Hauptsorge zum Thema freie Musik ist, dass die meisten Menschen in dieser Beziehung eine Gehirnwäsche hinter sich haben und denken, dass etwas das ihnen kostenlos gegeben wird, irgendwie nicht ganz in Ordnung sein kann, so wie mit den kleinen, völlig unnützen kleinen Spielzeugen, die in Cornflakes- oder anderen Müsli-Schachteln gepackt werden und vermittels deren die Kinder dazu verleitet werden sollen, ihren Eltern solange in den Ohren zu liegen, bis diese das Müsli kaufen.
Hast Du keine Angst vor freeridern, die aus Deiner Musik nutzen ziehen ohne Dir etwas dafür zu geben?”
Ben: Ich bin mir nicht sicher, was ein Freerider ist. Ist das jemand, der meine Songs covert und dadurch bekannt wird? Um ehrlich zu sein finde ich die Idee sogar sehr interessent, wenn jemand mit Liedern bekannt wird, die ich geschrieben habe. Ich z.B. bin ganz verrückt nach einem Musiker namens Harry Nilsson und die meisten Menschen kennen auch seine Musik aber haben noch nie etwas von ihm gehört. Er schrieb zum Beispiel “One (is the loneliest numer)” und noch ein paar andere Songs, die mir gerade nicht einfallen.
Wirst Du auch in Zukunft Musik machen und diese auch unter freien Lizenzen veröffentlichen?
Ben: Ich plane meine Musik unter der selben Lizenz zu veröffentlichen.
Was hattest Du als Musikerin bisher für ökonomische Erfahrungen?
Ben: Nun, die Leute kaufen standhaft meine CD’s von meiner Webseite und ich habe auch ein paar Spenden von Jamendo-Nutzern erhalten.
Spielst Du alle Instrumente selber? Welche Instrumente nutzt Du überhaupt?
Ben: Auf diesem Album spiele ich alle Instrumente selber und das Mädchen, das auf “A reason why”, dem vierten Track mit mir im Duett singt, ist Kassandra Trajkovich. Der Grund aus dem ich alle Instrumente selber spiele ist nicht, dass ich irgendwelche Stunts oder so machen wollte, sondern, dass ich einfach keine Musiker finden konnte, die mit mir zusammen spielen wollten. Die meisten Drums auf dem Album habe ich mit Fruity Loops gemacht, was einigermaßen okay war. Im Moment arbeite ich aber an einem Album mit einem echten Schlagzeuger so macht das auch viel mehr Spaß. Wir senden uns die Songs per E-mail hin und her.
Gibst Du ab und zu auch Konzerte?
Ben: Nein, ich habe bisher nur Musik aufgenommen. Ich denke nachdem ich das nächste Album beendet habe, werde ich ein paar Konzerte geben und wenn mir das Spaß macht, werde ich ein paar Konzerte geben und wenn mir das auch gefällt, werde ich eine kleine Tour probieren. Ich bin mir sicher, dass das eine gute Erfahrung wird.
Womit verdienst Du neben den Albumverkäufen über Deine Webseite und den Spenden, die Du über Jamendo bekommst, so hauptsächlich Dein Geld?
Ben: Ich bin ein Teilzeit-Freelance-Webdesigner, ein Flash-Programmierer um genau zu sein. Mein Vater hat eine Web Design Firma und ich mache dort im Prinzip schon mit, seit ich 15 bin.

What? There is only an inaginary band here today on the freemusicpodcast? – What a load of rhubarb and codswallop!
Well, you can’t get everything what you want, at least not always. And you have to admit, that Ben’s imaginary band sounds pretty real, dosn’t it? At least “Life in a Cave” from Ben’s album “Nocturnal Fables and Illusions” which is about a person who becomes pretty nervous and insecure in the presence of one certain other person and then consequently decides to move to a cave.
Because Ben’s Imaginary Band sounds so wonderful I asked Ben if I could write something about him and his music in the freemusicpodcast.
Ben: I’d be very happy to be on your blog! You’re welcome to upload my songs there. I’ll try and answer your questions as best as I can.
Why have you decided to publish your songs under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported and why didn’t use a more restrictive licence?
Ben: The reason I give my music away for free, and plan to continue doing so, is because I personally don’t look at it as something I should be trying to make money with; I am much more interested in affecting people, especially those close to me.
My main concern about giving music away for free is that most of us have been brainwashed at this point to believe that whenever something is given to us for free, it is because of lack of integrity, like the little toys found in cereal boxes.
Aren’t you afraid of freeriders who exploit your music without leaving any benefit for you?
Ben: I’m not sure what a freerider is? Would this be a band covering my song and taking credit? To be honest, I’m kind of interested in the idea of someone else becoming known for songs I’ve written. I’m very fond of a musician named Harry Nilsson, and most people know his music but have never heard of him – he wrote “One (is the loneliest numer)”, and a few other songs I can’t think of right now.
Will you publish future songs under the same free licence?
Ben: I do plan to always release my music under this same license.
What where your economical experiences as musician so far?
Ben: Well, people have been buying the CD’s from my website at a steady rate, and I’ve had a few donations from Jamendo users.
Do you play all the instruments by yourself? And what instruments do you use at all?
Ben: On this album I do play all the instruments myself, and the girl singing on “A Reason Why”, the 4th track of the album, is Kassandra Trajkowich. The reason for my playing all the instruments wasn’t a stunt or anything, I simply couldn’t find musicians who wanted to play with me at the time. Most of the drums on the album where made with Fruity Loops, which was ok, but I’m working on an album now with a real drummer (remotely actually, sending songs through emails), and it’s much more exciting that way.
Do you sometimes play concerts?
Ben: No, I’ve been strictly a recording musician so far. I think after I finish the album I’m working, on I will try to play a few concerts, and if I like that I’ll try for a small tour. It’s an experience, I’m sure.
Apart from the CD’s you sell via your website and the donations you get from Jamendo users – what do you do to make a living?
Ben: I’m a part-time freelance web designer, well actually, I’m more like a flash programmer, but I do other bits as well. My father has a web design company, and I’ve been taking part in that, pretty much since I was 15.
