Im Jahr 1999 haben sie abgelegt zu neuen Ufern. Sie jazzen, sie improvisieren, sie schreien und sie grooven. Mittlerweile haben die drei Musiker aus dem nahe dem Schwarzwald gelegenen Freiburg im Breisgau gemeinsam mit einigen Gastmusikern zwei Alben aufgenommen und unter freien Lizenzen veröffentlicht und ein drittes ist in der Röhre. Da bleibt kaum Zeit um auf die Jagd oder zum Holzfällen zu gehen, oder was machen die Leute von Gonzo Gonzales aus Freiburg im Breisgau sonst noch so?
Dr. Gonzo: “Nee, sonst machen wir nix anderes als Musik. Vieles liegt auf auf dem Ruhesessel und will gehört werden – weist ja selber wie’s is.”
Während ihr erstes Album “Nothing but Gonzo” aus dem Jahr 2003 den Soundtrack für einen sommerlichen Kopfausflug nach New York liefert, – wo es, nebenbei bemerkt, ein prima Nussgeschäft mit dem Namen “Nuts for nuts” gibt – kommt ihr zweites Album “GONZO GOA LIVE-Psychedelic Jazz Vibes” aus dem Jahr 2006 mit einer Art handgemachtem unplugged Jazz-Goa daher.
Doch warum nutzen die Gonzos überhaupt freie Lizenzen um ihre Musik zu veröffentlichen?
Dr. Gonzo: “Wir sind immer offen für neue Plattformen. Greif zu, such dir was aus und halt uns auf dem Laufenden. Die alten Sachen handhaben wir als Freeware – Lizenzen hin und her. Die neusten Sachen warten quasi noch auf die Höhrpremiere.”
Der hier vorgestellte Nussbossa gehört zu den ganz alten Sachen und auch wenn der Sound etwas spooky klingt, so liegt das nicht am Alter der Aufnahmen, sondern am billigen Aufnahmegerät, welches, wie ich finde, der Musik von Gonzo Gonzales einen schönen warmen Klang gibt.

In the year 1999 they set sails. They jazz, they improvise, they groove and they cry. By the time the three musicians from Germany’s near the Black Forest located Freiburg im Breisgau have recorded together with some guest musicians two albums and published them under free licences. A third one is just in the pipe. This means not much time left for hunting or woodcutting, or what else is it the three Gonzos are doing besides music?
Dr. Gonzo: “Nah, we don’t do anythign else except music. Many things are lying on the calm chair and want to be listened to – you know what’s it like, don’t you?”
While their first album “Nothing but Gonzo” from 2003 gives us the calm and blue soundtrack for a head trip to New York in the summer, their second album “GONZO GOA LIVE-Psychedelic Jazz Vibes” from the year 2006 comes along with a kind of handmade undplugged Jazz-Goa.
So why does Gonzo Gonzales use free licences to publish their music ?
Dr. Gonzo: ” We are alyway open for ne plattforms. Well, help yourself, just pick something out and keep us informed. We handle our old stuff as freeware – let’s not mind licences. The newest stuff still waits to its premiere.”
The Nussbossa that you can listen to here belongs to the very old stuff and even if the sound is somewhat spooky this is not due to the age of the recordings but because of the cheap recording device, which, as I think, gives a beautiful and warm sound to the music of Gonzo Gonzales.
