If Abraham was justified by works he has something to boast about; but he does not have anything to boast about before God, and therefore he was not justified by works.

When faith is born, we are still ungodly. Faith will begin to overcome our ungodliness. But in the beginning of the Christian life—where justification happens—we are all ungodly.
