Description

Elohim instructs Moshe on the laws of korbanot. These are the animal and plant offerings to be brought to the Sanctuary. The korbanot include the "elevation offering" (olah), which is completely burned for Hashem in the fire of the altar; five types of "vegetable offering" (mincha), prepared with fine flour, olive oil and olibanum; the "peace offering" (shlamim), the meat of which is eaten by the one who brought it, while certain parts are burned on the altar and others are given to the Kohanim (ministers).

Also discussed are the various types of "sin-offerings" (chatat), which are brought to atone for wrongdoings committed by the Grand Minister, the entire community, the king, or an ordinary Jew. In addition, the "guilt-offering" (asham) is brought by a person who has profited from the property of the sanctuary, or by one who is in doubt as to whether he has transgressed a prohibition from Heaven, or by one who has "betrayed Hashem" by falsely swearing to defraud.
