Gary played 154 games with the Hawthorn Football Club. He was able to live out his childhood dream of kicking a goal to get his team into a Grand Final as a result of a costly mistake from Melbourne’s Jim Stynes who controversially ran over the man on the mark giving away a 15 metre penalty resulting in Buckenara’s shot for goal. Buckenara went on to win four premierships during his football career.
