In this episode of Words on Wounds, Dr. Woo and Nurse Practitioner Terry Swanson, NP Wound Management, MHSc, FAWMA, FMACNP, discuss antimicrobial stewardship and the judicious use of antibiotics. Because antimicrobial resistance is high, it is important for clinicians to identify signs and symptoms of infection early. By providing appropriate wound bed preparation and hygiene in the early phases of infection, it is not necessary to prescribe as many antibiotics. The International Wound Infection Institute just launched a freely available consensus document that includes updated information on biofilm, antiseptics and antimicrobials, and signs and symptoms of infection.
