In this episode, Charlie and Jonathan Ishee, his former business partner and one of Broad River's original co-founders, share more stories from Broad River's history.
They start with the Savvy Spaces experiment - a new furniture venture that didn't work out the way it was imagined. Even though the idea, the name, the logo, and the tagline were all great, and the store was beautiful, it ultimately became a drain on the team. The learnings were high, the takeaways were high, and the entire experience led to a better understanding that focus is a finite resource as well as a greater appreciation for Ashley.
Then they discuss the pivotal meeting with Ashley executives at High Point Market that landed them the Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville market to the east, which was another contributing factor to shutting down Savvy Spaces and getting focused on growing with Ashley in pursuit of this incredible expansion opportunity. They talk about landing two keystone, prime locations for the company in the market - first in Fayetteville and then on the highly trafficked Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh.
The two discuss the motivation and reasoning behind moving the company from North Carolina to Fort Mill, South Carolina, to build a world-class Distribution Center of the Future, which would also serve as their new corporate campus, contact center, and training center.
