In this rare interview that took place almost 20 years to the day after Broad River initially opened for business in May 2003, Charlie sits down across from his former business partner Jonathan Ishee, one of Broad River's original co-founders. In part one of this multi-part series, Jonathan recounts Broad River's origin story - from where he got the idea, how he connected to Ashley Furniture, his partnership with his co-founder Jackson, and how they navigated starting a company while going to grad school.
Jonathan also shares valuable life lessons that he learned from his upbringing; from his time with his granddad World War II veteran Howard Miskelly; from his days on the sales floor at Miskelly Furniture; as well as his criteria for selecting a business partner; how Broad River landed in Charlotte, North Carolina, for its first store; some of the early business plans that he and his co-founder Jackson Moore considered before landing on the Ashley Furniture HomeStore idea; and why mattresses are his favorite things to sell.
