Welcome to Episode 9- The Burning Bed. Francine Hughes story P1.
This episode unpacks the case that had America scratcing their heads. Francine Hughes was a woman who endured physical, mental, and financial abuse for many years at the hands of her Abusive husband Mickey Hughes. The case captured America as a woman is put on trial for the murder of her abusive husband. A movie comes out starring the late Farrah Fawcett, who plays (Francine Hughes) called The Burning Bed. America in the 60's, 70's and 80's had draconian ways of thinking or rather antiquated ones about spousal abuse. The thought process was if a woman enters the institution of marriage she must be submisive, docile, and compliant. Women were not protected under any law, much less provisons could not be made because there is no law intervention. What will you do to try and get protection? what happens when their is no protection for what you have? What happens when you turn to Law Enforcement, Child Services, Welfare, your mother, and the system? At what point do you take matters into your own hands? Francine's case shunned a powerful light on what is spousal abuse. Women like Francine wore their plights on themselves and still the system did not provide the necessary tools. Spousal abuse was "downplayed largley" according to the source below and "The FBI had reported that spousal abuse was the United States most underreported crime". I mention this source on the show. I also mention what Francine said in an interview with People Magazine. The sources that I used are all linked below. I mention The Burning Bed movie directed by Robert Greenwald. The book The Burning Bed by Faith Mcnulty. Get your copy of the book. Guys the email below and the IG page is for you guys to join in on the conversation of a questioned I posed.
