Description

It's not easy to quickly summarize the professional life of Jeff's guest, Emily Duncan. She double majored at the University of Iowa where she completed studies in the acclaimed Undergraduate Creative Writing Program while also earning a bachelor's degree in music. Next came Juilliard and a Master of Music degree. Her musical performances since then are extensive and varied, including recent gigs at Lincoln Center and the Met Gala.

Based in New York City, Emily often can be found performing contemporary works of living composers. She also has credits as a sound designer, engineer, music supervisor, consultant, theatrical artist, off-Broadway musical producer, podcast producer, web app creator, and more. Oh, and she taught Jeff's daughter how to play flute. Maybe the best way to summarize Emily is to say that she lives a highly creative life.

What You Need to Know

(03:27) While in college, Emily realized that she could write and be involved in theatre without an advanced degree, but the type of music she wanted to make required at least a master's degree. That's how she ended up at Juilliard in NYC.

(04:55) Emily's specialty is contemporary classical music, but she also loves pop music, musical theater, jazz, etc. Different types of music require very different ways of playing or "extended techniques."

(08:55) Playing flute with Lizzo and other talented flutists at the 2023 Met Gala was a dream-come-true experience for Emily. James Galway, the greatest living classical flute player, was there also performing live for the first time in three years.

(11:33) In 2022, Emily created the web app, GigCrunch, to help freelance musicians take control of their finances by learning if they are being paid fairly. Check out the free prototype at https://gigcrunch.app/

(18:25) Emily encourages anyone who has not seen a drumline show to go online and type in "drumline" or look for videos of The Ohio State Marching Band. Enjoy the musical arrangements and the arrangements of their bodies on the field. It's a technical sport.
