Tower of Power- The Ultimate Collaborative Experience
On this Tower of Power episode, “Five Decades and Counting”, Tower of Power members Emilio Castillo, Stephen "Doc" Kupka, and David Garibaldi talk about their time with the legendary R&B/Funk band. Fans will see the formidable and all-inclusive group, Tower of Power in a lively conversation with Terry Wollman as they embark on the story of their lives as a band - and as a family. Founded in 1968 in Oakland California, Tower of Power has been gracing center stage for more than 50 years, and these three founding members freely share what the journey of fame and brotherhood has been like for each of them.
In the first half of the interview, you’ll hear enriching stories about their connection to one another as the group’s leader, Emilio Castillo, comments on why Tower of Power is so special, what sets them apart, and why they have lasted for so long. Through addictions and egos being expunged, Tower of Power has made it through some of their hardest trials because they believed in their gifts, and each other. Founding drummer David Garibaldi had a life-altering accident, but fought past the pain to get back to playing with his bandmates -- his brothers. Moreover, Tower of Power offers more than just friendship. Their group is a welcoming place for any musicians who want to freely express themselves through song and instrument. One of the more inspiring themes of this interview is intertwined with the fact that Tower of Power are OG musicians who never cease their work flow.
Co-founding member, saxophonist Doc Kupka, states his belief in the importance of rest, always taking into consideration that although they're an older band, their age does not stop their determination and passion for music. What's always remained for this group is a sense of unity. And as Emilio Castillo put it, their foundation in God has allowed them to be “diligent and creative.” Tower of Power has endured triumphs and pitfalls, but one thing is true -- they’re bound for life and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
