Happy Holidays Fam. Todays episode is going to be a short and sweet slap in the face in regards to gift giving during the holidays and how we need to approach it especially if finances are a consideration.
I want to start by sharing a story of myself circa 2015-2016 - so 3 years before I decided to take my business full time. At this time I was working at my full time job and had 2 side hustles (which by 2017 turned into 3)… but still barely making ends meet. And truth be told, I dreaded the holidays. I dreaded it because I could never afford to buy what I truly wanted to get people. My love language (if you haven't read the 5 love languages, highly recommend) in terms of how I like to show love is gift giving. How I like to receive love is acts of service.
So… to be in a financial place where I felt so anxious and stretched to give people gifts brought me to tears on many occasions and I felt like such a failure and a disappointment. During the holidays I would just think, "Man…one day I just want to be able to get my family and friends really awesome gifts and not even think twice. That's the kind of financial place I want to be in."
I'll share with you that story, what I would tell my former self when it came to going broke buying gifts for others, what I'm doing now for my mom, and more!
