In 1975, adman Gary Dahl was sitting around drinking with some friends, and they were all complaining about their pets. He joked that the perfect pet would be a rock. Within a few months, he had actually launched the product, and it was out there. Each "Pet Rock" came in a box with air holes, a user manual, and a suggested name. You were supposed to feed it, water it every day, and say nice things to it. He sold tens of millions.
