In July 2019, there was fear amongst residents in Metchosin, British Columbia when it was announced that 2 men had escaped William Head Institution, a minimum security facility located on the southernmost tip of Vancouver Island. Around the same time, it was announced that Metchosin resident Martin Payne was found dead in his home, and foul play was suspected.
