This is the second addition of Top Tips for Rural Health Careers.  Our guests to share their top three tips for people thinking about going into rural health careers.  

We will hear from: Dr Mercy Wanjala, Dr Sankha Randenikumara, Dr Mayara Floss, Aebhric O’Kelly, Major Dr Ashlesha Tawde-Kelkar and Dr Christian Rechtenwald.

 

Mercy (00.53)

  1. Have a passion to serve people.

  2. Build your capacity, often you will be the senior most clinician there.

  3. Have a plan for your career. 

Sankha (02.35)

  1. Be a role model.

  2. Have a good relationship with the community and encourage community engagement.

  3. Enjoy your rural area and rural practice. 

Mayara (04.45) 

  1. You are not alone - connect with Rural Seeds, Rural WONCA, reach out to networks and colleagues.

  2. Take care of your mental health, do not burnout, try to set limits and boundaries.

  3. Create a good relationship with your community.  Work with the community outside of your clinical capacity

  4. Climate change, think about it in your practice. 

Aebhric (06.37)

  1. Be good at the basics.  

  2. Think outside the box, provide care with what you have.

  3. Be here now - be present in the moment and be the best you can be. 

Ashlesha (08.33)

  1. Go into the community with an open and receiving mindset.  Accept what the community has to offer to you, learn from them.

  2. When you practice rural health it is easy to counter existing practices and beliefs of the community, we should not forget why we are there.  We are there to improve the quality of life for the community.

Christian (11.00)

  1. See as much as you can so you can paint your own picture of what you want to be and what your career goals are.  

  2. Don’t go into rural practice on your own, the feeling of being on your own can be crushing.  Learn to set boundaries.  Join networks. 

  3. Prepare to talk about stuff that is not directly connected to the disease centered healthcare model you learned at university.
