The Guardian has published a report exposing a secret and probably illegal agreement between Israel, Google, Amazon. Israel has one of the largest and most comprehensive intelligence and surveillance programs in the world. In 2021, Google and Amazon entered into a $2.1 billion contract with Israeli that would allow it to store its mass surveillance data, such as secretly recorded phone calls, on Google and Amazon's commercial computer servers. On Wednesday, The Guardian reported that the contract, called Project Nimbus, included a secret agreement between the three organizations that would inform Israel if a law enforcement agency, or international human rights agency, wanted information about Israel's surveillance programs. Google and Amazon routinely share information with investigative agencies when requested, and do not inform the target of the investigation. This newly exposed agreement uses codes to secretly inform Israel of who is requesting information about them. The codes are exact amounts of small money transfers to Israel, each amount signifying a different hidden message. Amazon and Google deny the accusations.
