After faking her own suicide, the former top lawyer of the Israeli military has been arrested for her role in the leak of surveillance video that showed Israeli soldiers gang-raping a Palestinian prisoner. In July of 2024, nine Israeli soldiers were arrested for beating and raping a Palestinian detainee in Sde Teiman prison, the administration of which is known for its torture of prisoners. Israeli politicians incited a riot outside of the prison, protesting the fact that the soldiers were arrested. The following month, video footage of the incident was leaked to the media, resulting in 5 of the soldiers receiving jail time. An investigation was launched to determine who leaked the footage. In October, the Israeli military's top lawyer, Major General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, became a suspect in the leaking case, and resigned. On Sunday, Tomer-Yerushalmi went missing for several hours, leaving behind a suicide note. However, she was found the next day, and arrested on suspicion of attempting to fake her own suicide in order to destroy her phone and the incriminating evidence on it.
