The Guardian has revealed a US government document that is being presented to unaccompanied children who arrive at the border, which encourages the children to self-deport, even if going back to their country would make them unsafe. The document is read to children within the first few days of them entering the US while they are still in the custody of Customs and Border Protection, before they can see any relatives in the US. It says: "If you choose to seek a hearing with an immigration judge or indicate a fear of returning to your country you can expect the following: you will be detained in the custody of the US Government for a prolonged period of time." It also says that the child's sponsor may be arrested and deported if they do not have legal status, or prosecuted "or aiding the child's entry, and adds that if the child turns 18 in government custody they will be turned over to ICE for deportation. The document also tells the child that there will be "no administrative consequences" for self-deporting, and that they may be able to apply for a visa later if they do so. However, this is misleading, as a path to legal status after deportation is almost impossible.
