In an interview with MSNBC, President Biden said that he knew Israel was carpet bombing civilians in Gaza, and he knew that it was illegal, but he continued to support it nonetheless. The interview, conducted by Lawrence O'Donnell, aired on Thursday night and has been criticized by journalists for its unquestioning nature. Regarding the killing of civilians in Gaza by Israel, Biden says that he brought up the issue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who responded by comparing himself to the United States during World War II. According to Biden, Netanyahu said "But you carpet-bombed Berlin. You dropped a nuclear weapon. You killed thousands of innocent people, because you had to in order to win a war." Biden says that he responded to those remarks by saying that the United Nations was created to avoid such problems. However, attacking a civilian population for the actions of a few, known as collective punishment, is considered a war crime by the United Nations. This is not addressed by O'Donnell during the interview and he does not question Biden's support of Netanyahu.
