Senior White House Advisor Stephen Miller called Pretti an "assassin"who "tried to murder federal agents." All of these claims were contradicted by videos of the incident posted on social media. After some Republican legislators called into question the Trump officials' version of events, and the National Rifle Association called for a full investigation due to Pretti's status as a permitted gun owner, Trump officials have begun to use more neutral language, and have denied having made the accusations against him.
