The investigation began after the Los Angeles Times published a leaked security video showing eight probation officers watching a group of teenagers beating another teenager. The 17-year-old victim suffered a broken nose and brain injury. According to Bonta, officers allowed or encouraged 69 fights among 143 inmates ages 12 to 18. Two officers, Taneha Brooks and Shawn Smyles, are accused of telling other officers not to intervene in the fights or to make any reports. In order to keep the operation secret, Smyles instructed the youth inmates to not seek medical attention for their injuries. The Probation Department refused the state's order to close Los Padrinos, and state board members have said they don't know what legal recourse they have to enforce it.
