On Tuesday night, several of the student protest encampments in solidarity with Palestine were violently attacked. In New York City, the administrations of Columbia University and City University of New York sent riot police to attack the encampments. Police arrested over 300 people, and Minouche Shafik, president of Columbia University, asked police to stay on the campus permanently until at least May 17th to ensure that the encampment is not reestablished. CNN reporter Miguel Marquez said of the attack, "I've covered lots of this sort of stuff around the world, and I've never seen this many police moving into one area." CNN Senior Correspondent Shimon Prokupecz said, "I've covered many protests here in New York. I have never seen a response like this." At the University of California in Los Angeles, a group of over 100 people carrying Israeli flags and chanting "U.S.A." attacked the encampment using sticks, poles, pepper spray and fire works. Several people were seriously injured. Although the attack began just before midnight, police did not arrive until 1:30 AM and did not take any actions until 3:00 AM.
