On Monday, ICE agents arrested an 18-year-old high school student in Massachusetts when they accidentally happened to come across him and determined that he was undocumented. Todd Lyons, acting director of ICE, said his agents pulled over a vehicle belonging to someone they were looking for. However, the subject's son, 18-year-old Marcelo Gomes, was driving his father's vehicle. Gomes, who Lyons said was in the country unlawfully, was then arrested. Tricia McLaughlin, a Department of Homeland Security official, said "While ICE officers never intended to apprehend Gomes, he was found to be in the United States illegally and subject to removal proceedings, so officers made the arrest. Gomes remains in ICE custody pending removal proceedings." Fellow students, teachers, friends and even Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey criticized the arrest.  On Monday, ICE arrested almost 1,500 people all over Massachusetts, claiming that they are focusing on individuals with "significant criminality." Regarding Gomes, Lyons said, "I didn't say he was dangerous, I said he was in this country illegally."
