The government of Belgium has become the first to arrest Israeli soldiers based on international war crimes jurisdiction. Since the creation of Israel, the United Nations repeatedly declared Israel's actions to be illegal under humanitarian law. The UN has officially recognized Israel's committing of war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing and genocide. In November of 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant for crimes against humanity. On Sunday, the Belgian government forcibly arrested two Israeli soldiers who were in the country to attend a music festival. One of the soldiers had posted a video of himself on social media destroying a building in Gaza, and the other posted a picture of himself posing next to a Palestinian person that he was using as a human shield. The government acted on a demand from the human rights groups Hind Rajab Foundation and The Global Legal Action Network. The soldiers were questioned and released, but the investigation continues.
