El lunes 29 de julio se cumplirán dos años del asesinato de David Pelaez Chavez a manos del oficial de Sherrif del condado de Sonoma, Michael Dietrick. El 29 de julio de 2022, un residente de Knights Valley llamó a la policía y dijo que Chávez, un campesino inmigrante, había intentado entrar en su casa. Los agentes del SHeriff llegaron y persiguieron a Chávez hasta un arroyo, donde recogió una piedra. Con la piedra en una mano y una herramienta de jardinería en la otra, fué disparado tres veces por Dietrick, en la cabeza y en el pecho. En las imágenes del incidente tomadas con la cámara corporal, se puede escuchar a los agentes gritarle instrucciones a Chávez, pero según los miembros de la familia, es poco probable que las entendiera porque no hablaba inglés. El 31 de octubre del mismo año, la familia Pelaez Chavez presentó una demanda por homicidio contra la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Sonoma. Esa demanda tiene un plazo de prescripción de dos años, lo que significa que, si no se toma una decisión antes de esa fecha, el caso será cerrado. Los activistas locales han estado trabajando con la familia Pelaez Chávez para crear conciencia sobre el caso. Los oficiales involucrados en el tiroteo todavía trabajan para el Departamento del Sheriff.
Monday, July 29th will be the two year anniversary of the killing of David Pelaez Chavez by Sonoma County Sheriff Deputy Michael Dietrick. On July 29th 2022, a resident of Knights Valley called the police and said that Chavez, an immigrant farmworker, had attempted to break into their home. Sheriff Deputies arrived and chased Chavez into a creek, where he picked up a rock. With the rock in one hand and a garden tool in the other, he was shot three times, in the head and in the chest, by Dietrick. In body-worn camera footage of the incident, Deputies can be heard yelling instructions at Chavez, but according to family members, it is unlikely that he could understand them because he didn't speak English. On October 31st of the same year, the Pelaez Chavez family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. That lawsuit has a two-year statute of limitations meaning that if no decision is made before then, the case will be dismissed. Local activists have been working with the Pelaez Chavez family to raise awareness about the case. The officers involved in the shooting are still working for the Sherrif's Department.
