President Trump intervened in a FIFA World Cup match in order to influence a decision in the interest of the US national team. During the match between the US and Bosnia and Herzegovina last week, US striker Folarin Balogun was issued a red card for a tackle that injured another player, resulting in ejection from the game and an additional one-game suspension. President Trump then contacted FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who awarded Trump with the first ever FIFA Peace Prize last year. An exception was then made for the one-game suspension for a red card. The Union of European Football Associations, or UEFA, criticized FIFA's action as "unprecedented" and said it risked undermining the integrity of the sport. In a statement to the press, Trump said "So I saw the play, and I'm a person that loved sports and was a good athlete, and I understand sports really well. And that wasn't a foul." Later in the same statement, he said, "They talk about the red card like it's fine. Red card, I didn't know what the hell a red card was, but when I found out I said, 'You gotta be kidding.'"
